UP Tragedy: Street Food Seller’s 1.5-Year-Old Daughter Dies After Falling Into Boiling Chickpeas Pot; Family Had Lost Elder Daughter To Similar Accident

Sonbhadra: In a heart-breaking tragedy from Uttar Pradesh's Sonbhadra, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl died after falling into a pan of boiling chickpeas meant for gol gappas. The child, Priya, was rushed to hospital but succumbed to over 80% burn injuries during her treatment. Shockingly, her elder sister had died in a similar accident just two years ago.

Priya's father, Shailendra, a gol gappa vendor originally from Jhansi, has been living with his family in a rented home in Duddhi for the past four years. On Friday, June 27, his wife Pooja had set chickpeas on the stove for their gol gappa stall and stepped out for some work. In that brief moment, little Priya, while playing nearby, reportedly fell face-down into the pan of hot chickpeas.

Pooja heard her screams and rushed in to find her daughter badly burnt. “I immediately took her out, wrapped her in cloth and ran to the CHC,” she told Amar Ujala. Doctors at the CHC referred her to the district hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Despite emergency treatment, Priya could not be saved.

Second Daughter Also Lost in Similar Incident

What makes this tragedy even more devastating is that the couple’s elder daughter, Saumya, had also died two years ago in a similar incident, after falling into a vessel of boiling dal.

The incident has shattered the family. Shailendra, speaking in tears, told the publication, “Two years ago I lost my elder daughter in a similar tragic accident. My children were my world. Both are gone now.” Upon hearing about Priya’s death, both parents reportedly fainted and were revived by neighbours who rushed to their aid.

The family’s grief is compounded by the unbearable similarity of the two accidents. “We used to see our elder daughter in Priya. Now she too is gone. I am very unfortunate," said Shailendra.
