After Narayana Murthy’s 70 hour work week, now Infosys asks employees, ‘mind your…’, over…

Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, sparked a debate when he suggested young employees to work 70-hour weeks to boost the nation’s productivity. Now his company Infosys is warning employees who are spending longer hours during work from home. They also flagged health risks and urged them to focus on work-life balance.

Infosys signals its remote working employees about the health risks linked to long working hours and asks them to prioritize work-life balance. The company is monitoring employee work hours and sending emails to those  who are extending 9.15 hours a day five days a week, reported Economic Times.

In emails sent to employees it has asked them to follow regular working hours as far as possible. “We must work for 9.15 hours a day for five days a week, and if we overshoot this while working remotely, it prompts a trigger,” an employee told ET. The mail also mentions their average work hours in the past month which were higher than the company’s standard working hours.

According to ET report, the mail sent by the HR  asked employees to ‘’Mind their health and read, read, ‘’While we appreciate your commitment, we also believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for both your well-being and long-term professional success.’’

“We understand that work demands and deadlines can sometimes lead to longer hours. However, it is important to maintain the balanced work-life schedule to enhance productivity and overall happiness.”

The email added, “Take regular breaks during your workday; Let your manager know if you are feeling overwhelmed or need support with reviewing priorities. Speak to your manager about delegating tasks or redistributing some responsibilities as appropriate; Take time to recharge during off hours, minimising work-related interactions whenever possible.”

Narayana Murthy after a 70 hour work week statement had clarified that it was a personal choice and not an imposed standard. While he shared his own experience of working long hours for over 40 years but had emphasized that individuals should decide their work-life balance.
