The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 pre-quarterfinal game between Inter Miami and Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday was one-way traffic from kick-off. Despite the presence of their talismanic skipper Lionel Messi, the Herons were no match for the reigning European champions. The Parisians had already netted four times before halftime, and there was no comeback from Inter Miami in the second half at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
PSG was in its element that Inter Miami struggled simply to get the ball out of their own half. Luis Enrique's team held 73% possession in the first 45 minutes and outshot the Major League Soccer side 10-0, including six attempts on goal.
Messi, 38, produced moments of magic but couldn't influence the game enough to make the scoreline look respectable. He took shots on target and fed a tasty ball to Luis Suárez with only Gianluigi Donnarumma to beat, but the Uruguayan's poor first touch meant the chance went begging. It was the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner who connected with Miami's first shot on goal in the 63rd minute, but it was easily scooped up by Donnarumma. Messi had another chance with a header about 10 minutes later, forcing Donnarumma to make a diving save—the only real threat to his third shutout of the tournament.
Meanwhile, a section of social media users are up in arms against Argentina’s World Cup winner for unsportsmanlike behavior during the game. Sharing footage from the match, they claimed that the modern football "GOAT" was so frustrated that he took a swing at PSG’s Vitinha.
The video shared by some on X showed Messi and Vitinha fighting for the ball in the middle of the park. The former Barcelona star ended up losing the battle as the PSG midfielder easily kept him at bay and found a teammate to pass the ball to. As the one-on-one situation ended with Vitinha releasing the ball, Messi was seen taking a violent swing at his opponent, as if to punch him.
"This guy doesn't know how to lose—what a bad sport," one user replied.
"How can you be one of the greatest and be such a sore loser?" another noted.
