Kerala or Bangladesh? Yunus's office claims Awami League spread 2023 Indian video as 'July gang culture'
The post put up by Press Wing of Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus | X
The office of Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has claimed that "propagandists" from Sheikh Hasina's banned Awami League party were spreading an old Kerala video falsely labelling it as evidence of the "July gang culture", a reference to the students' rebellion which led to the collapse of the Hasina regime.
The Press Wing of Yunus claimed that the video showing a violent clash between two groups of teenagers was, in fact, a 2023 video from Kerala. According to Yunus's Press Wing, the video was being spread across Bangladesh as evidence of the law and order situation in the country. "An old video from 2023 showing a student clash in Kerala, India, has been falsely repurposed on the internet as a recent example of student violence in Bangladesh under the label of ‘July Gang Culture’ — a claim that is entirely false," the statement said.
The alleged video has a group of students in school uniforms slapping and kicking each other.
The July Rebellion in Bangladesh saw students across various universities pour into the streets in Dhaka seeking the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. The protest that began seeking an end to rules that set aside up to 30% of government jobs for the descendants of veterans who fought the country’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan later turned into a widespread rebellion that toppled her government. Almost a year later, the Awami League has been banned in the country as Bangladesh heads to elections.
