Similipal Tiger Reserve to Close for Visitors due to Monsoon

Baripada: Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district will shut its gates to visitors starting July 1 due to the monsoon season.

According to STR Field Director Prakash Chand Gogineni, the closure is a routine measure to ensure safety and conservation during heavy rains. The reopening date will be announced later through local newspapers.

While the core reserve area will be closed, ecotourism complexes at Jamuani, Gurgudia, Kumari, Barehipani, and Ramatirtha will remain operational for tourists, offering a chance to experience the region’s scenic beauty.

In the 2024-25 fiscal year, STR attracted 38,483 visitors, including 12 international tourists, generating Rs 4.26 crore in revenue. This includes Rs 1.22 crore from jungle safaris, Rs 2.75 crore from nature camps, and Rs 29 lakh from entry permits, as per reports.

Spanning approximately 2,750 square kilometers, Similipal is a biodiversity hotspot, home to 96 orchid species, 55 mammal species, 361 bird species, and 30 reptile species, underscoring its significance as a key conservation area.
