Assault on Official: BMC Employees Stage Cease-Work Protest, Don Black Badges

Bhubaneswar: Employees and officers of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today halted work and wore black badges in protest following a violent attack on Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo in his office on Monday.

The assault, allegedly linked to a local BJP leader, has sparked outrage among BMC staff, who are demanding justice and enhanced security measures.

According to reports, six assailants stormed Sahoo’s workplace, reportedly enraged over a contentious phone call involving the BJP leader. The attackers dragged Sahoo by the collar and beat him severely in front of shocked staff members, leaving the civic body reeling from the brazen incident.

“The attack on our Additional Commissioner has deeply hurt our staff and officers. This is a highly unfortunate incident,” said BMC Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil.

“We are taking necessary steps to strengthen office security and protocols to prevent such incidents in the future”, he said.

Earlier, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik expressed his deep shock at the ‘brutal’ kicking and assault of Sahoo.

He also urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to take immediate action against those responsible.
In a post on X, he wrote, “What is more appalling is that this happened in broad daylight, in the heart of the capital city-#Bhubaneswar to a senior officer while he was in his office, hearing grievances of people.”

“I ask @MohanMOdisha Ji to take immediate and exemplary action against not only those who perpetrated, but more importantly, the political leaders who orchestrated and conspired in this shameful attack. The people named by the officer in his FIR have behaved like criminals. If a senior officer is not safe in his own office, then what law and order will ordinary citizens expect from the Government?” he added.
