IMD Issues Yellow Alert For 3 Kerala Districts On July 2; Tamil Nadu To Witness Showers Until July 7
The southwest monsoon continues to remain weak over Kerala, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, widespread rainfall activity has been observed across most parts of Kerala and at a few locations in the Lakshadweep Islands. In Tamil Nadu, rainfall was reported at isolated places, while dry weather prevailed over Puducherry and the Karaikal region.
Rain Likely Across Kerala & Lakshadweep
Despite the weak monsoon conditions, the IMD has forecast that rain or thundershowers are most likely to occur at most places in Kerala and at many locations in Lakshadweep in the coming days. In the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, skies are expected to remain generally cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.
Yellow Alert
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall — defined as 7 to 11 cm in 24 hours — at isolated places in northern Kerala over the next two days. The alert covers the following districts: July 2 (Day 2): Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, July 3 (Day 3): Kannur and Kasaragod.
Residents in these districts, especially those in vulnerable and low-lying areas, are advised to remain cautious due to the risk of waterlogging and localized flooding.
Low-Pressure System Over Jharkhand
The low-pressure area that formed over Gangetic West Bengal has now shifted to Jharkhand and its surrounding regions as of 8:30 AM on July 1. The system is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. It is expected to move slowly west-northwestward across Jharkhand over the next 24 hours. This weather system may influence rainfall patterns across central and eastern India.
Tamil Nadu Forecast
In Tamil Nadu, rainfall occurred at isolated locations. The IMD forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until July 7.
In Chennai, the IMD predicted thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain in some areas on July 2.
