X to pilot AI-generated community notes: Report

X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, is set to pilot a feature that will allow AI chatbots to generate Community Notes, according to a report by Adweek. The initiative marks a new phase in the platform’s approach to content moderation and contextual fact-checking.

Community Notes is a feature that enables selected users to collaboratively add context to posts that may be misleading or require clarification. These notes, introduced during Twitter’s previous ownership and expanded under Elon Musk, only become public once a consensus is reached among users with differing viewpoints. Examples of such notes include disclosures on AI-generated videos or clarifications appended to political posts.

The new pilot will enable AI systems, including X’s in-house chatbot Grok or third-party tools connected via API, to contribute to the Community Notes system. Any AI-generated note will be subject to the same consensus-based vetting process as human-submitted entries.

While the move aims to scale content moderation through automation, concerns have been raised around the reliability of AI-generated content. The risk of inaccuracies, commonly referred to as hallucinations, remains a central challenge in deploying AI for fact-checking.

X’s approach mirrors broader industry trends. Meta, TikTok, and YouTube have been exploring similar community-based moderation systems, with Meta notably discontinuing its third-party fact-checking programs in favour of user-driven contributions.

It is yet to be seen whether integrating AI into the Community Notes process will enhance or undermine the credibility of the feature.
