Bihar Cop Forces Youth To 'Lick Spit' After Asking His Caste For Not Allowing Him To Pass In Traffic
In a disturbing incident reported from Bihar's Shekhpura district, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mehuns Police Station brutally thrashed a tempo driver and forced him to lick his spit over a petty issue. According to reports, the accused officer asked the driver for his surname and, upon learning his caste, allegedly retorted, "Brahmins are my enemies," before assaulting him.
The tempo driver paid a heavy price for failing to give way to the accused, who was riding a Bullet bike. Enraged officer detained the driver, took him to the police station, and mercilessly thrashed him. Not satisfied with just beating him, the officer allegedly forced the driver to apologise by making him lick spit off the ground. The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Pratyumn Kumar, son of Ajay Mishra, a resident of Mehun village.
The victim stated that around 7:30 pm on Monday, he was returning home after dropping off passengers at a crossing when the Station House Officer (SHO), Praveen Chandra Diwakar, approached from behind on his Bullet bike in plain clothes. The SHO repeatedly honked for the driver to make way, but when there was a slight delay, he overtook the tempo in a dramatic fashion and forced it to stop. He then called other police personnel from the station. The victim alleges that the SHO began beating him with a baton right in the middle of the road before confiscating his tempo and dragging him to the police station.
At the station, he was brutally beaten again. The victim claims the SHO then asked about his caste. After forcing him to lick spit and apologise, he was finally released. Speaking to the media, the victim said that when he told the SHO he was a Brahmin, the officer allegedly retorted, "Brahmins are my enemies," while continuing the assault. However, SHO Praveen Chandra Diwakar has a different version, claiming the tempo driver whistled at a woman constable on patrol, which led to his thrashing at the station.
On Tuesday, the victim approached Barbigha MLA Sudarshan Kumar to file a complaint. Shocked by the incident, the MLA immediately contacted SP Balram Kumar Chaudhary, who assured a thorough investigation and appropriate action. The MLA condemned the incident, stating that police should not treat the public with such inhumanity. He warned that if no action is taken, they will escalate the matter to the DGP level and even stage a protest outside the police station.
SP Balram Chaudhary confirmed that an inquiry was launched after receiving the victim’s complaint. The investigation has verified the assault, while other allegations are still being probed. The SHO has been suspended and placed on line duty, with departmental action to follow.
