NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of AtrocityAgainst Dalits in Odisha’s Ganjam, Seeks Report in Two Weeks

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report highlighting a brutal atrocity against two Scheduled Caste persons in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

The incident, which occurred on June 26, 2025, involved the victims being brutally assaulted, forced to eat grass, and made to drink drain water by individuals from another community on suspicion of cattle smuggling.

According to the report, the victims were also forcibly tonsured and their mobile phones were snatched by the attackers.

Taking serious note of the reported human rights violations, the Commission observed that the details, if true, reflect a grave infringement of the victims’ dignity and rights. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, seeking a comprehensive report within two weeks.

The NHRC has directed that the report must outline the action taken against the accused and specify whether any relief or compensation has been extended to the victims.
