19-yr-old girl drinks acid after boyfriend refuses to marry her; accused arrested

A 19-year-old girl in Delhi attempted suicide by consuming acid after allegedly being sexually assaulted for years by her boyfriend, who had promised to marry her but later refused.

A case was registered against the accused, identified as Rehan (25), under various sections of the BNS and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was later arrested.

DCP (Southwest) Amit Goel said the incident came to light on June 18 when the Vasant Kunj (South) police station received a medico-legal case (MLC) report from Spinal Injuries Hospital about a suicide attempt by the woman.

A police officer was immediately sent to the hospital, where the victim was declared unfit for statement. The crime team visited her residence, recovered the acid bottle and initiated a preliminary inquiry.

“Investigations revealed that the woman had been in a long-term relationship with Rehan, a resident of Shankar Camp, Rangpuri Pahadi. The relationship had reportedly taken a toll on her mental health,” the DCP said.

The girl was alone at home when she consumed acid around 4:45 pm. A neighbour, who saw her in distress, rushed her to the hospital. She was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.

On June 25, the victim’s mother submitted a formal complaint to the police, alleging that Rehan had sexually exploited her daughter for seven years on the pretext of marriage and had blackmailed her with objectionable photographs. She also provided the victim’s mobile phone, which contained voice recordings that supported the allegations.

As the victim is still unfit for statement, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Vasant Vihar deputed a tehsildar to visit Safdarjung Hospital. A report was submitted, recommending a forensic analysis of the mobile phone and legal action.

Upon analysis, the voice recordings corroborated the complaint. Based on the findings, the police registered an FIR.

According to police, the accused, Rehan, who has studied up to Class XII, was previously employed as a loader at the airport. He is currently unemployed and his father is a labourer.
