Violent clash breaks out in jail; FIR against 8 inmates
A violent altercation between two groups of inmates at Kapurthala Modern Jail on the night of June 28 has led to the registration of an FIR against eight prisoners. The police action followed a statement from Rajinder Singh, alias Mintu, a murder convict who sustained serious injuries during the clash.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.45 pm in Barrack 2/10 while Rajinder Singh was watching television.
He claimed that an undertrial inmate, Paramveer alias Rinka, attempted to charge his device using an electrical socket. Singh alleged that Rinka, along with seven other undertrial inmates — Harjit Singh alias Happy, Narinder Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Harjaap Singh, Lakhbir Singh, and Lovepreet Singh alias Labbha — attacked him in a coordinated assault, leaving him seriously injured.
Rajinder Singh was subsequently admitted to a hospital, where a medical-legal report (MLR) was prepared. Based on his hospital statement, the Kotwali Police registered an FIR and initiated formal proceedings. SHO Kirpal Singh confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further action will depend on the testimonies of the other involved parties.
In the meantime, two other inmates — Manjinder Singh and Tejveer Singh — who were part of the opposing group, also suffered injuries during the scuffle. Both are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Amritsar, though their statements have not yet been recorded, according to police sources.
