'Surviving On Delayed Rental Reimbursements': 8 Years After Eviction For Metro 3, Girgaon & Kalbadevi Residents Still Await Homes

Mumbai: Even as Mumbai’s ambitious underground Metro 3 nears completion, the pain of displacement continues to haunt hundreds of residents from Girgaon and Kalbadevi.

Eight years after they vacated their homes to make way for the project for Girgaon, Kalbadevi stations, the project-affected persons (PAPs) are still waiting for promised ownership flats in the in-situ rehabilitation buildings.

Allegation Made By Residents

Residents allege the construction of their new homes is crawling at a “snail’s pace”, with no clear timeline in sight. “It’s been more than eight years since we moved out, and they’ve barely built four floors of the 48-storey building promised to us,” said Nilesh (Bala) Ahirekar, 48, a resident of Kranti Nagar.

“We’re surviving on delayed rental reimbursements, and there’s still no clarity on final agreements,” he alleged.

Vikas Nagavkar of Chandramahal, echoed similar frustration. “We’ve been told in a recently held meeting we’ll get possession by Diwali 2027. But going by the pace of work, it seems uncertain. There’s no developer board at the site,” he said.

“Some tenants have even been disqualified by MHADA (who validates eligibility) and their rent reimbursements have stopped now,” residents alleged. Comment from MMRC was yet to be received at the time of going to press.
