Mohammed Shami should ‘pay Rs 4 lakh per month as alimony’; wife says ‘amount not sufficient’
Indian cricket team’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his wife Hasin Jahan are once again in the headlines.
The Calcutta High Court, while hearing the case recently, has ordered that Mohammed Shami should pay Rs 4 lakh per month as alimony to his wife and daughter. After this decision of the court, Hasin Jahan’s reaction has come out, in which she has expressed her displeasure by calling this amount insufficient.
Hasin Jahan says, “The maintenance amount is decided based on the husband’s income and social status. As per a strict Supreme Court directive, a husband is required to provide his wife and children the same lavish lifestyle he enjoys. So, considering Shami Ahmed’s luxurious lifestyle, I believe ₹4 lakh is too little. We had initially demanded ₹10 lakh, and that too seven years and four months ago. With inflation now, we will pursue a revision. This order is a big victory for me.”
She also expressed displeasure over the attitude of Mohammed Shami. She said, “When the person who was once nothing suddenly became something, he became arrogant. Now he does not care about his wife and children. He has not contacted us. Last time also he met his daughter only out of fear of the court."
It is worth noting that there has been a family dispute between Hasin Jahan and Mohammed Shami for a long time and the matter is pending in the court. Hasin Jahan has previously made serious allegations of domestic violence, infidelity and mental harassment against Shami.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed Mohammed Shami to pay alimony of Rs 4 lakh every month to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and daughter during the legal battle.
Jahan had approached the High Court against the order of the District Sessions Court, in which the cricketer was directed to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to his daughter in 2023.
Justice Ajay Kumar Mukherjee said in the order, “In my opinion, payment of an amount of Rs 1,50,000 per month to petitioner No. 1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 per month to their daughter till disposal of the main application would be just and reasonable to ensure financial stability of both the petitioners."
“However, in respect of the daughter of the petitioner, the husband/respondent No. 2 shall always be free to voluntarily assist in the education and/or other reasonable expenses of the petitioner in addition to the amount aforesaid,” the order said.
