Collegium recommends 10 judicial officers for appointment as Punjab & Haryana HC judges

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of 10 judicial officers for appointment as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Collegium led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Wednesday, the Supreme Court announced on Thursday.

According to a Collegium resolution, the judicial officers recommended for appointment as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court were Virinder Aggarwal, Mandeep Pannu, Parmod Goyal, Shalini Singh Nagpal, Amarinder Singh Grewal, Subhas Mehla, Surya Partap Singh, Rupinderjit Chahal, Aradhana Sawhney and Yashvir Singh Rathor.

Once the appointments are notified by the government, the number of judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court would go up from the current 51 judges to 61 against the sanctioned strength of 85.

The Collegium, which included Justice Surya Kant and Justice Vikram Nath, has also recommended 26 advocates and judicial officers for elevation as judges in the high courts of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Patna, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Gauhati during its meetings held on July 1 and 2.

The judicial officers recommended for the Delhi High Court are Vinod Kumar, Shail Jain and Madhu Jain. The Collegium also approved the proposal for appointment of five advocates–Pushpendra Yadav, Anand Singh Bahrawat, Ajay Kumar Nirankari, Jai Kumar Pillai and Himanshu Joshi–as judges of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, five judicial officers–Rajesh Kumar Gupta, Alok Awasthi, Ratnesh Chandra Singh Bisen, Bhagwati Prasad Sharma and Pradeep Mittal–have also been recommended for the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The Collegium approved the names of advocates Gouse Meera Mohiuddin, Chalapathi Rao Suddala, Vakiti Ramakrishna Reddy and Gadi Praveen Kumar for the Telangana High Court, advocate Tuhin Kumar Gedela for the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and advocate Anuroop Singhi and judicial officer Sangeeta Sharma for the Rajasthan High Court.

Advocates Ajit Kumar and Praveen Kumar have been recommended for the Patna High Court; and advocates Anjan Moni Kalita and Rajesh Mazumdar and judicial officers Pranjal Das and Sanjeev Kumar Sharma for the Gauhati High Court. The Collegium also recommended the appointment of Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee, Additional Judge, as a Permanent Judge of the Meghalaya High Court.
