Nigerian national held for cheating

A team from the Faridabad Cyber Police has arrested a Nigerian national accused of cheating via a matrimonial website. The accused was produced before a city court today and remanded to judicial custody.

According to the police, a woman residing in Faridabad lodged a complaint stating that she had come into contact with a man on Bharat Matrimonial, who claimed that his family lived in Brazil while he resided in Germany. After some time, the two began conversing on WhatsApp and the man told her he would soon be moving to India with his family.

On April 9, he told her that he was sending her jewellery, US dollars and clothes as gifts. On April 11, she received a call from someone claiming to be from the Customs Office, who said a courier had arrived in her name, and that she needed to pay a tax of Rs 37,500. The caller added that failure to do so would result in the items being deposited with the Customs Department.

“When I checked by entering the number on the tracking link, the courier was showing at the Delhi Airport Customs Office. I had deposited Rs 37,500 in the account mentioned but after some time, I got another call and was asked to deposit Rs 98,700 and I had deposited but I did not receive any courier. Later I was found duped and moved to police,” the woman stated in her complaint.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at the cybercrime police station in Ballabhgarh. During the investigation, the cyber police team arrested the Nigerian accused from the Mehrauli area of Delhi on Wednesday.

“The arrested accused was identified as Musa Ali Ikeja of Logus, Nigeria, and was currently residing in Mehrauli, Delhi. During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused’s partner used to talk to the girls through matrimonial apps and lure them into his talks and get money deposited in their accounts,” said the spokesperson of Faridabad police.
