26 years on, the roar of Tiger Hill echoes
As India marks 26 years since the monumental victory atop Tiger Hill during the Kargil War, Brigadier Khushal Thakur (Retd), the commanding officer of 18 Grenadiers, recalls the fierce battle with pride and reverence. Hailing from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, Brig Thakur led his men through one of the most iconic operations in India’s military history.
On the night of July 4, 1999, after days of relentless fighting and strategic manoeuvring, Indian soldiers triumphantly hoisted the national flag atop Tiger Hill, reclaiming a critical peak from entrenched Pakistani intruders. The victory not only marked a turning point in Operation Vijay but also became a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit.
“This wasn’t just another military operation—it was a matter of honour. We carried the burden of expectation and the will to win,” Brig Thakur said, reflecting on the assault led under his command. “Our motto was clear: Vijay ya Veergati—victory or martyrdom.”
Faced with icy winds, steep cliffs, and enemy fire, the battalion chose the most arduous northern and eastern approaches — routes considered nearly impossible. Yet, it was this bold choice that took the enemy by surprise and shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
A decisive role was played by the Ghatak platoon under Lt Balwan Singh, alongside bravehearts like Havildar Madan Lal and Grenadier Yogender Yadav. In a daring night assault, they scaled vertical cliffs under fire, initiating an offensive that ultimately broke enemy resistance. With reinforcements from the 8 Sikh and 2 Rajputana Rifles, Tiger Hill was recaptured—etched forever in the annals of valour.
The operation brought the unit national recognition, with the 18 Grenadiers receiving a string of gallantry awards, including the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously awarded to Grenadier Yogender Yadav), the Maha Vir Chakra, and the Vir Chakra.
“Even today, that moment remains vivid,” Brig Thakur said. “When we saw the tricolour fluttering high above Tiger Hill, we knew it wasn’t just a peak—it was the spirit of India standing tall.”
The battle for Tiger Hill remains a stirring testament to India’s military excellence and the extraordinary courage of its soldiers—one that continues to inspire generations across the country.
