SC junks petition challenging NEET-UG 2025 results

Noting that thousands of students will be impacted, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition challenging the NEET-UG 2025 results on account of an alleged error in one of the questions.

“We have dismissed identical matters. We agree there might be multiple correct answers. But we cannot interfere in an exam which is given by lakhs of candidates. It’s not an individual’s case. Thousands of students will be affected,” a Bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice R Mahadevan said.

The Bench pointed out that it had already dismissed an identical petition two days ago and that it would not be proper to interfere on the basis of individual grievances in examinations of such a massive scale.

The dismissal of the petition ensures that counselling for admission to various medical colleges on the basis of NEET-UG results would continue to take place.

Petitioner Shivam Gandhi Raina had challenged the correctness of question No. 136 from code No. 47 of the question paper, alleging that the answer marked by the National Testing Agency (NTA) was flawed. He had also sought a stay on the ongoing counselling process until revision of the final results.

The Bench, however, turned down his plea.

“The Supreme Court’s interference in 2024 was due to widespread grievances regarding the discrepancies and shortcomings in the conduct of the exam,” the Bench told counsel, senior counsel R Balasubramanium, representing the petitioner, after he urged the top court to intervene this year as well.

NEET — the sole entrance examination for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India — is conducted by the NTA.
