Delhi Speaker Vijender Gupta forms House panels for welfare of elderly, transgenders
Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijender Gupta, announced the constitution of six new Special Committees for the legislative year 2025–2026, raising the total number of Assembly Committees to 35.
The new committees will focus on areas such as the welfare of senior citizens, inclusion of transgenders and persons with disabilities, promoting peace and harmony, and strengthening oversight of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Speaking on the development, Gupta said the formation of these Special Committees reflects the Assembly’s evolving role in addressing emerging social needs and strengthening democratic oversight. He emphasised that these committees are not just institutional arrangements but vital instruments of social responsibility to ensure that concerns of marginalised and underserved communities receive focused attention and timely redressal.
Among the newly formed bodies are the Special Committee on the Welfare of Senior Citizens, chaired by Tilak Ram Gupta, and the Special Committee on the Welfare of Transgenders and Persons with Disability, chaired by Karnail Singh. Other panels include the Special Committee on Peace and Harmony, the Special Committee on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Special House Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Contemptuous Behaviour by Government Officers with MLAs, and the Special Committee on Salary and Other Allowances of Members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The Speaker informed that the committee formation was carried out in four phases — with 11 committees constituted in the first phase, 7 in the second, 11 in the third, and the latest 6 in the fourth and final phase for the year. He underlined that the Assembly is committed to fostering responsive, inclusive, and equitable legislation, with these committees playing a crucial role in strengthening institutional mechanisms and ensuring accountability in governance.
Gupta added that through these initiatives, the Assembly aims to uphold its promise of addressing the needs of every section of society, especially the elderly, the differently-abled, and the transgender community, while promoting harmony and fair governance across the Capital.
