Respecting martyrs: EV station plan near Dharamsala War Memorial scrapped

During his recent visit to Dharamsala, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the cancellation of the proposed electric vehicle (EV) charging station in front of the War Memorial, popularly known as Shahid Samarak. The decision came swiftly after a delegation of ex-servicemen raised concerns about the sanctity of the site, which commemorates the supreme sacrifice of India’s soldiers.

Moved by the sentiments expressed by the veterans, the Chief Minister assured them that the pristine beauty and dignity of the War Memorial would remain untouched. Deputy Commissioner Kangra, Hemraj Bairwa, confirmed the decision, stating that the administration was now identifying an alternative location for the EV station. “The proposal, pending since 2022, has now been closed in the larger interest of the veterans and public sentiment,” he said.

On July 1, a delegation from the War Memorial Society—including Lt Col J.G. Singh (Officiating President), Lt Col GB Thapa (Ex-President), and JWO Thakur (General Secretary)—met the Chief Minister and voiced their concern. The CM immediately responded, acknowledging the sensitivity of the matter and promised to relocate the station. The veterans expressed their gratitude, saying, “We thank the CM and the district administration, especially the Deputy Commissioner, for acting swiftly in the interest of our brave soldiers.”

The proposal had sparked widespread public outcry. Locals and tourists alike opposed any construction near the memorial, which is not only a place of remembrance but also a popular destination receiving high footfall. The Kangra DC had also raised objections, stating that such a development would compromise the integrity of this sacred site.

Established in 1977, the War Memorial sprawls across 7.5 acres and features plaques bearing names of post-independence martyrs. Since 2000, a committee of ex-servicemen has been managing its upkeep with limited resources. The recent decision by the state government is being seen as a significant gesture of respect for the nation’s fallen heroes.
