No water at tail-end of canals, complain farmers in Lambi
Farmers of six villages in the Lambi Assembly segment on Friday claimed that their paddy crop was drying up due to the unavailability of water at the tail-end of the Kakhanwali and Teona minors.
Lambi is the home turf of Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian.
The farmers who complained about the situation belong to Kandukhera, Kakhanwali, Sikhwala, Bhullarwala, Bhitiwala and Hakkuwala villages.
A delegation of farmers also met officials of the Water Resources Department at Gidderbaha.
Balwinder Singh, a farmer from Kandukhera village, said, “The situation has worsened as the Sirhind Feeder is currently not supplying water to the Kakhanwali and Teona minors.”
Jagsir Singh, Sub-Divisional Engineer, Water Resources Department, Gidderbaha, said, “The Kakhanwali and Teona minors are distributaries of the Sirhind Feeder canal at its tail-end. The beds of these two minors are at some height, so these receive water from the Sirhind Feeder only when its level is above 12 feet. At present, the water level is below this point. The situation is expected to ease soon, as we have already brought the matter to the notice of the higher authorities.”
