Actor Rahul Sharma talks about his character, Anshuman, in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai on Star Plus.
You have joined one of television’s most iconic shows — Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. How did this opportunity come to you?
It happened quite organically. The offer came to me post the show’s seven-year leap. It was for a cameo. Honestly, I’ve never done a cameo before, so I was skeptical at first. But the moment I heard it was from Rajan sir, I didn’t think twice. I said, “Okay, let’s do it.” There’s a deep sense of respect and connection I have with Rajan sir, and that made all the difference.
Have you worked with Rajan Shahi before?
No, this is my first project with Director’s Kut Productions. But I did have a memorable encounter with Rajan sir that left a big impression on me. We met by chance near my place, and he said some very kind things — about my talent. That gesture touched me deeply.
And now, three months later, you’re working with him. That must feel surreal?
Absolutely. It’s destiny. That one meeting and the words he said stayed with me. And when this opportunity came, it felt right at every level — professional, personal, and emotional.
Tell us about your character Anshuman.
Anshuman is a very rich, intelligent and sharp personality. He’s straightforward and no-nonsense. If he’s talking business, he won’t get distracted. If someone is messing things up, he’ll call it out. He’s got two to three layers, and the audience will get to see that unfold.
How was it slipping into this new character, visually and emotionally?
Visually, the look is quite powerful — very suited-booted, sharp and well-groomed. Emotionally, I had to tap into a side that’s very different from me. That’s been a challenge, but I’m enjoying the process. It’s helping me grow as an actor.
How does it feel to be back on Star Plus after so long?
It feels like coming home. It’s been 10 years since I last did a show with Star Plus. Everything aligned perfectly — the channel, the production house, the role and most importantly, Rajan sir’s trust. It’s a win-win for me.
Finally, what would you like the audience to take away from Anshuman’s journey?
I’d like the audience to see the different shades of Anshuman — his strength, his sharpness, but also the complexity behind his actions. There’s more than what meets the eye, and I hope they find him as intriguing as I do while playing him.
