Reduced Toll Rates: The government has reduced toll rates by up to 50 per cent for those sections of national highways that have structures such as tunnels, bridges, flyovers or elevated stretches. This is a move that will reduce travel costs for motorists.
A new method for calculating toll rates notified
The collection of user charges at toll plazas on national highways is done as per the ‘NH Fee Rules, 2008’. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended these rules and notified a new method for calculating toll rates.
According to the existing rules, users pay 10 times the regular toll for every kilometre of structure on national highways. In this structure means bridge, tunnel, flyover or elevated highway.
A. Ministry gives examples to explain toll rates
The ministry has given examples to explain the new toll rates. The ministry said if the total length of a section of national highway is 40 km, including only the structure, then the minimum length will be calculated as follows- 10 3 40 (ten times the length of the structure) = 400 km or five times the total length of the section of national highway = 5 3 40 = 200 km.
The user fee will be calculated for the shorter length i.e. 200 km and not 400 km. In this case the user fee is only on half (50 per cent) of the length of the road.
Toll rates cut by up to 50 per cent
A senior official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the current toll calculation method is aimed at compensating the high construction cost associated with such infrastructure. He said the revised notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cut toll rates by up to 50 per cent for sections such as flyovers, underpasses and tunnels.
