Kamal Haasan silenced from making any comments related to the Kannada language

A Bengaluru court passed an ex-parte interim injunction (without hearing from the opposing party) order on Friday, which restrains Kamal Haasan from making any remarks in the Kannada language. The decision comes after the actor commented on the dialect during the audio launch for his film Thug Life. "Kannada was born from Tamil,” the actor said—a statement that did not sit well with Kannadigas and drew a wave of criticism.

According to PTI, an Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge passed the order based on a complaint filed by Mahesh Joshi, president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP). According to NDTV, The court noted that the KSP "has been working towards the promotion of Kannada language, literature and culture across the state of Karnataka". The group sought an injunction against the actor from making any further statements related to the language and its literature.

As a result, the court restrains the Nayakan actor from posting, writing, or publishing any statement or remarks claiming linguistic superiority over the Kannada language, as well as commenting on the state’s land and culture. The court further ordered the actor to appear before the court on August 30 for further hearing.

Haasan’s remarks did not just trigger widespread criticism but also resulted in his film Thug Life being barred from being screened in the state. The matter reached the Supreme Court, which ruled that the Mani Ratnam directorial had received the appropriate certification for screening but the producers of the film decided to without a Karnataka release due to low box-office numbers.
