Strong earthquake hits Nepal, second in 7 days
Kathmandu: A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Sunday morning at around 8:21 a.m. (IST), the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The quake hit the country at a depth of 10 kilometres at 27.70° N latitude and 87.76° E longitude. The NCS took to X and informed about the seismic activity: “EQ of M: 3.5, On: 06/07/2025 08:21:30 IST, Lat: 27.70 N, Long: 87.76 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal,” it wrote. There is no immediate report of major damage to public property or casualties. Further details are awaited.
Second Earthquake In Seven Days
This is the second quake that jolted the country. On June 29, an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude on the Ritcher scale struck Nepal, NCS reported.
Notably, shallow quakes are considered more dangerous than deeper ones because their energy release is close to the Earth’s surface. This seismic activity causes stronger ground shaking, increasing the risk of structural damage and casualties.
Nepal Is Highly Earthquake-Prone
The country’s geographic position at the juncture of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it highly prone to strong earthquakes. The colliding plates create massive pressure, resulting in seismic activity.
Nepal is located in the Himalayas region, at the juncture of the colliding Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This creates a high-risk seismic zone. The subduction of the Indian Plate under the Eurasian Plate adds more geological stress that increase the seismic activity.
Earthquakes are not new for Nepal and the country has a long history of the seismic activities, including devastating events like the 2015 earthquake
