Gujarat AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava arrested for ‘attempt to murder’

Gujarat AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava was arrested on Saturday night after he allegedly attacked a taluka panchayat functionary at Dediapada in Narmada district.

 

Police have filed an FIR against Vasava, invoking serious charges including an attempt to murder.

 

The incident took place during a meeting organised at the prant office in Vasava's constituency Dediapada. According to the FIR, Vasava got agitated after his nominee was considered for appointment as a member of the 'Aapno Taluko Vibrant Taluko' (ATVT), a local-level coordination committee.

 

When he started abusing a woman president of Sagbara taluka panchayat, Sanjay Vasava, Dediapda taluka panchayat president, objected to it. Following this, the MLA hurled a mobile phone at Sanjay, causing injuries to his head.

 

According to the FIR, Vasava also tried to attack Sanjay with glass shards, threatening to kill him.

 

The FIR was filed under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman through words, gestures), 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult) and 324 (3) (damage to property) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

 

Vasava’s arrest has sparked tension in Dediapda with AAP workers staging protests in the constituency.

 

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said the BJP was "furious" after losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-polls.

 

"AAP MLA @Chaitar_Vasava has been arrested by BJP in Gujarat. BJP is furious after losing to AAP in the Visavadar by-election. If they think that AAP will be scared by such arrests, then this is their biggest mistake. People of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP's misrule, BJP's hooliganism and dictatorship, now the people of Gujarat will answer BJP," Kejriwal said in a post on X.
