EOW Mumbai Registers 102 MPID Cases in 9 Years, Arrests 196; Unit 8 Leads In Action

Mumbai: In a comprehensive review of cases registered from 2015 to 2024 by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police, a total of 102 cases were handled across 13 units under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act, resulting in the arrest of 196 individuals. Official data reveals that 66 charge sheets have been filed, while 36 cases remain under active investigation.

According to EOW sources, Unit 8 (MPID) reported the highest number of cases with 67 and also made the most arrests—141 individuals. The unit filed 45 final charge sheets and continues to investigate 22 more cases under the MPID Act.

Other notable statistics include:

  • Unit 1 (Housing-1): 12 cases registered, 10 accused arrested, 8 charge sheets filed, and 4 cases under investigation.

  • Unit 2 (Housing-2): 1 case registered; the single case remains under investigation.

  • Unit 3 (General Cheating-1): 6 cases registered, 10 accused arrested, 3 charge sheets filed, and 3 cases under investigation.

  • Unit 4 (General Cheating-2): 1 case registered, 1 charge sheet filed.

  • Unit 5 (General Cheating-3): 1 case registered, 2 accused arrested, no charge sheet filed yet, and 1 case under investigation.

  • Unit 6 (General Cheating-4): 7 cases registered, 10 accused arrested, 7 charge sheets filed, and no active investigations.

  • Unit 7 (Shares): 4 cases registered, 21 accused arrested, 2 charge sheets filed, and 2 cases under investigation.

  • Unit 12 (Sales Tax Cell - 1): 1 case registered, 1 accused arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

  • Units 10 and 11 (Banking-2 and 3): No new cases or arrests during the review period.

  • Unit 13 (NSEL): 2 cases registered, 1 arrest made, no charge sheets filed yet, and both cases under investigation.

These figures highlight the sustained efforts by the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police to clamp down on financial fraud and economic crimes in the city. The department continues to pursue several high-profile investigations and remains committed to bringing economic offenders to justice.
