SJ Suryah reunites with composer AR Rahman for new directorial 'Killer'

Last month, actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah announced his return to direction with a film titled Killer, produced by Gokulam Gopalan's company Sree Gokulam Movies and Suryah's Angel Studios. On Monday, July 7, the former announced that the film will have music by composer AR Rahman.
Suryah had teased fans with a trick question about the composer addition a day earlier. Confirming Rahman's entry on his social media page, Suryah wrote: "Yah it’s none other than OUR ISAI PUYAL , THE MUSICAL LEGEND, INDIAN PRIDE, OUR ONE N ONLY AR Rahman."
The project, which is reportedly a romantic action comedy, sees Suryah returning to direction after a decade, marks a reunion between him and Rahman after working in the former's second, third and fourth directorials — New (2004), Anbe Aaruyire (2005), and Puli (2010) — for which the latter had composed the score.
Notably, Suryah is a musician himself, having crooned tracks in some of his films, in addition to composing the music for his last directorial, Isai, which was released in 2015. In fact, the movie, which marked his debut as composer, revolved around music, with Suryah playing a fictitious music director. It was said to be drawn from the lives and career journeys of AR Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja and other noted composers.
Killer is said to have filming schedules in India and abroad. Suryah had earlier revealed, in an interaction with The New Indian Express, that the film would be something that can be called a cross between a James Bond movie and elements of his earlier film Kushi.
“If a James Bond film and my own Kushi are blended together, the result would be Killer. The audience might find this amalgamation to be a bit odd, as it sounds like mixing water and oil. But I am confident that my screenplay would blend everything seamlessly and get the audience invested and excited,” said Suryah then.
The film marks Gokulam Movies' maiden Tamil venture. As for the cast details, they are expected to be revealed in due time. Gokulam Movies' last production was L2: Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Suryah made his directorial debut in 1999 with the Ajith Kumar-starrer Vaalee. He was last seen in Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2, co-starring Vikram and Suraj Venjaramoodu.
