Central Railway introduces the 1st EMU rake with renovated compartment for Senior Citizens

Central Railway, in a progressive move to enhance the travel experience for senior citizens, has introduced the 1st EMU rake with dedicated and renovated compartment for Senior citizens.

Central Railway's Matunga Workshop has rolled out the first Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake featuring a dedicated compartment for elderly passengers in the Mumbai suburban network.

In an immediate response to Railway Board directives, a dedicated team of Matunga Workshop, executed structural and interior modifications on one EMU rake by converting a middle luggage compartment in the 6th coach from Mumbai end into a dedicated space for senior citizen commuters, marking a significant step towards inclusive mobility.

This dedicated compartment will minimize the difficulty / hassles faced by Senior citizens while boarding / deboarding suburban trains especially during rush hours and ensuring a comfortable and safe journey.

Special Features of this new rake include:

Enhanced Seating Configuration: by way of three 3-seater benches and two 2-seater units (9+4 seating capacity) optimizing comfort and accessibility.

Stainless Steel Tubular Partitions: installed to improve compartment layout and facilitate visibility, featuring sight-level panels and integrated grab poles.

Safety Features: Knurled vertical grab poles at doorway footboards and emergency ladders installed on both door underframes to bolster passenger safety.

Aesthetic Improvements: Vinyl wrapping inside the compartment enhancing visual appeal and ambiance.

With the rollout of this 1st prototype, Central Railway sets a precedent in thoughtful infrastructure upgrades geared toward senior citizen comfort—kick-starting the process for converting all the EMU rakes for this facility.

Central Railway continues to set new benchmarks in railway technology and infrastructure, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers while optimizing operational processes for enhanced efficiency.

These upgrades reflect the Indian Railways' continued commitment to passenger-centric innovation, especially for vulnerable sections of society.
