ASI’s son dies of ‘drug overdose’ in Kapurthala
Assistant Sub-Inspector Narinder Singh’s son Amandeep Singh (29), a permanent resident of Italy, who had come to India in January for marriage, died of alleged “drug overdose” in Kapurthala on Sunday — a week ahead of his birthday on July 13.
Following Amandeep’s death, a video of his father performing ardas beside the body of his son has gone viral on social media.
“Amandeep told me that he would celebrate his birthday on July 13 and then return to Italy,” he said.
“After his wedding in February, Amandeep had taken to drugs. He implored me and his mother to get him treated. We admitted him to the PIMS, Jalandhar, on June 3 and hoped that he would give up drugs. He was discharged on June 20,” said ASI Narinder.
“On the evening of July 5, Amandeep told us that he was heading out to get beer. Despite being Gursikhs, I allowed him, thinking beer was better than my boy falling prey to drugs,” he said.
“At 9 pm, my son headed out to get beer. As he stopped taking calls, my wife, who’s the Sarpanch of Dainwind village, and I searched for him till 2:30 am. At 8 am, the police found Amandeep’s body and contacted us,” Narinder added.
Asked on what advise he would give others to keep their kids away from drugs, Narinder said, “Mai apna bacha nahi sambh sakya, dooje nu sambhan vaste ki nasiyat de sakdan. (Who am I to advise others, when I couldn’t protect my own son). I think I am an unsuccessful father. Maybe, I couldn’t take care of my son. I can only appeal to others not to consume drugs.”
Kapurthala SHO Kirpal Singh said some capsules were also found near Amandeep’s body. He said the 29-year-old’s post-mortem examination had been conducted and his body had been handed over to
his parents.
