BRICS Summit: PM Modi Urges Unity On Critical Minerals, Warns Against Resource Weaponization

Addressing the annual BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged member nations to work collectively to secure supply chains for critical minerals and technology, cautioning against the use of these vital resources for “selfish gain” or as “weapons” against others.

Speaking during a session on multilateralism, financial issues, and artificial intelligence (AI), Modi stressed the need for global standards on AI to ensure transparency and prevent misuse. While acknowledging AI’s immense potential to enhance daily life, he also expressed concerns about ethical issues, bias, and the risks associated with its unchecked growth. To advance the global discourse on AI, he announced that India will host an “AI Impact Summit” next year.

Modi’s remarks on critical minerals come amid rising global concern over China’s export restrictions and opaque practices in the sector. He emphasized that resilient and secure mineral supply chains are essential for global stability.

Underscoring the importance of diversity and multipolarity, Modi said these were key strengths of the BRICS grouping. “At a time when the global order is under stress and the world faces uncertainty and multiple challenges, the relevance of BRICS is more evident than ever,” he stated. To strengthen the bloc’s impact, Modi proposed four key initiatives.

First, the BRICS New Development Bank should operate on a demand-driven basis and prioritize long-term sustainability in project approvals. Second, the group should establish a science and research repository to support innovation, particularly benefiting countries in the Global South.

Third, there must be a collective effort to secure and strengthen supply chains for critical minerals. Finally, BRICS should take the lead in promoting the responsible and ethical use of AI. In an upcoming session focused on the environment, COP30, and global health, Modi is expected to reiterate India’s strong commitment to climate action, highlighting initiatives that promote growth which is both people-centric and planet-friendly.
