What caused Air India plane crash? AAIB submits preliminary probe report to Centre

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is probing the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 19, has submitted its preliminary report to the Civil Aviation Ministry and other relevant authorities.

 

The report is based on the initial findings of the probe, reported ANI news agency. 

 

The content of the report is not immediately known but it is believed that the AAIB has included critical information about the cause of the crash.

 

Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft enroute to London Gatwick crashed into a medical hostel complex soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing over 270 people, including 241 people who were onboard the plane.

 

The crash, one of the worst in aviation history, is being probed by a multi-disciplinary team, headed by the director general of the AAIB chief G.V.G. Yugandhar.

 

The team also included an aviation medicine specialist, an ATC officer, and representatives from the US government's National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

 

An NTSB team is currently stationed in Delhi and working closely with Indian authorities at the AAIB Lab, reported ANI.

 

Last week, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that the investigation team was looking into every angle, including potential sabotage.

 

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) of the crashed flight was recovered from the rooftop of a building on June 13 while the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) was found in the debris on June 16. 

 

The memory module was successfully accessed and its data was downloaded at the AAIB Lab in Delhi on June 25.
