Rare Virilising Ovarian Tumor Successfully Treated At Saveetha Medical College
Saveetha Medical College is proud to announce the successful diagnosis and surgical management of a rare virilising ovarian tumor in a 69-year-old postmenopausal woman from Oothukottai, located 40 km from Chennai — a case that underscores the institution’s commitment to clinical excellence and multidisciplinary care.
The patient was admitted to the Department of Gynaecology under the expert supervision of Dr. Seetha Lakshmi and Dr. Archana, presenting with abdominal pain and pronounced hyperandrogenic symptoms, including male-pattern baldness, excessive hair growth, and deepening of the voice. These symptoms had been present for the past five years.
Given the severity of the masculinisation, Dr. S. Ramkumar, Consultant Endocrinologist, conducted a comprehensive hormonal evaluation, which revealed significantly elevated testosterone levels of 290 ng/dL — nearly six times the normal range.
MRI imaging identified a 30 × 40 × 40 mm solid-cystic mass in the right ovary. The patient underwent a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, expertly performed by Dr. Mohana Priya, Gynaecologic Oncologist, and her team, followed by advanced post-operative care.
Post-operative evaluation showed a dramatic reduction in testosterone levels to 12 ng/dL. Histopathological analysis confirmed the mass to be a steroid cell tumor — a rare subtype of virilising ovarian neoplasm.
Virilising ovarian tumors are an uncommon source of androgen excess, particularly in postmenopausal women. This case highlights the importance of early clinical suspicion, complete hormonal analysis, and advanced imaging in facilitating accurate diagnosis and effective treatment — delivering comprehensive care at an affordable cost.
