What is fibermaxxing? The latest TikTok trend that has got everyone talking about

We have seen various trends on social media, including the Ice Bucket Challenge, the hype over the Dalgona Challenge, looksmaxxing, and now the latest, 'fibermaxxing'.

If looksmaxxing involves people making changes to their appearance to fit in 'beauty standards', then 'fibermaxxing' is a dietary trend of fitting more fiber into your diet.

What is the buzz about fibermaxxing?

This TikTok trend involves people maximising their fiber intake in their diet. This can be done by adding more fiber-rich foods to your meals and snacks throughout the day.

This is done to support one's gut health, avoid chronic diseases, and control blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

While adding more fiber to one's diet is appreciable, many are even wondering if the trend can shift away from consuming the minimum quantity of protein that is necessary for the body needs.

What are the sources of dietary fiber?

One can find fiber-rich content in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

How much fiber is necessary?

As per the National Academy of Medicine, the following are the daily fiber recommendations for adults:

21 grams for women older than age 50

25 grams for women age 50 or younger

30 grams for men older than age 50

38 grams for men aged 50 or younger

When should you restrict your fiber intake?

As per the Mayo Clinic, in the following conditions, one needs to reduce the fiber intake.

-After certain surgeries that involve the intestines or stomach

-If you suffer from conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, it is advisable to reduce the fiber quantity. Doctors may also ask to eat less fiber during a bout of diverticulitis.

-After developing narrowed intestines

-During radiation therapy

-Living with gastroparesis, as fiber foods may make the symptoms worse

-If you are preparing for a colonoscopy

Please consult a doctor for more information while making dietary changes.
