Abohar businessman murder case: 2 accused shot dead in police encounter

Two accused involved in the murder of Abohar businessman Sanjay Verma were killed in a police encounter on the outskirts of Abohar town on Tuesday, officials said. The accused were being taken for the recovery of weapons when the gunfight erupted, they said.

The accused were arrested within 24 hours of the incident in a coordinated operation by the Fazilka Police and the Anti-Gangster Task Force, the officials said.

Businessman Verma, co-partner of New Wear Well Emporium in Abohar, was shot dead in broad daylight outside his showroom on Monday.  The killers escaped using a motorcycle, aided by an accomplice who was waiting nearby. Later, they abandoned the bike along the roadside and fled in a car parked near the Sitto Gunno road.

Special Director General of Police (Law & Order) Arpit Shukla, after inspecting the crime site on Tuesday afternoon, said that the investigation in the case was progressing rapidly and that all accused would be in police custody soon.

Multiple wings and teams of the Punjab Police are working in coordination to trace the culprits, and the probe is moving in the right direction, Shukla said.

He said that a case was registered yesterday on the statement of the deceased’s son Himanshu Verma at City-1 police station under Section 103, 3(5) of the BNS and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act. Shakti Kumar of Azeemgarh was named in the FIR.

After the investigation, two key accused Ram Rattan of Patiala and Jaspreet Singh of Mardanpur were named in the FIR. Preliminary interrogation revealed that both played the role of facilitators by helping the shooters escape after the incident, Shukla said.

He said further investigation is ongoing and efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused at the earliest. He clarified that no prior threat had been reported by the family.
