Patiala DC-led team inspects garbage dumping site
A high-level team led by Deputy Commissioner Dr Preeti Yadav, along with officials from the Punjab Pollution Control Board and the Municipal Corporation, inspected the municipal solid waste dump site near Sanauri Adda today to review ongoing remediation efforts.
Yadav directed officials and the agency handling solid waste management to expedite the disposal of legacy waste and ensure full compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The site is being managed by M/s Sagar Motors, Latur (Maharashtra).
During the visit, complainant Sanjeev Kumar, who had earlier approached the National Green Tribunal regarding fires and foul smell from the site, joined the inspection and expressed satisfaction with the improvements. He noted that no fires have occurred recently and the odour has significantly reduced.
The joint team confirmed that no garbage burning was taking place. Methane detection meters with fire alarms and a stationed fire brigade vehicle have been installed as preventive measures. Officials assured that the remaining waste would be processed within three months.
The DC emphasied that open dumping and waste burning must be eliminated to reduce air pollution in the city. She stated that a report of the inspection will be submitted to the Punjab Pollution Control Board and forwarded to the NGT.
Appealing to residents, she urged everyone to cooperate in waste management by minimizing waste generation, ensuring source segregation of wet and dry waste, and sending recyclables for reuse.
“Together, we can make Patiala clean, green, and waste-free,” the DC said.
