Cow vigilantes seek permission to join Nuh’s Jalabhishek Yatra after 2023 riots

Nearly two years after communal violence during the Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh left six people dead, several cow vigilante groups, including controversial right-wing vigilante Bittu Bajrangi, have expressed their intent to rejoin this year’s religious procession scheduled for July 14.

The yatra, traditionally held on the first Monday of Sawan, sees devotees from surrounding areas visiting ancient Shiva temples in the region. However, in 2023, tensions between vigilante groups and local Meo youth culminated in a violent clash during the event — the first communal riots in the area’s recent history.

Now, vigilante groups are once again making public declarations to participate, raising concerns among authorities who are already on high alert.

Bittu Bajrangi, a self-styled cow vigilante from Faridabad, who was arrested for his alleged role in the 2023 riots and remains barred from entering Nuh without official permission, has submitted a formal request to join this year’s yatra.

Speaking to ‘The Tribune’, Bajrangi confirmed: “I have the right to worship and move around freely in this country. The murder accused in those riots face no restrictions — including a local MLA who is booked under serious allegations — yet I am being targeted. I have sought permission to go to Nuh for the yatra and have filed a petition in the high court.”

While the Nuh Police has not issued an official statement, a senior officer confirmed receipt of Bajrangi’s application and acknowledged that he has also been actively promoting his planned participation on social media.

Multiple vigilantes have similarly posted online, claiming they will join the yatra this year and ensure its “success.”

In light of these developments, the Nuh police has intensified social media surveillance and finalised a comprehensive security plan for the yatra route.

“We are all set to organise the yatra. Vigilance and surveillance have been stepped up,” said the official spokesperson of Nuh Police.

Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena has been holding meetings with religious groups and local leaders to maintain communal harmony during the pilgrimage.

“Nuh is all set for the Jalabhishek and Kanwar yatras. There will be adequate security arrangements, and we are confident the events will conclude peacefully,” said Meena.

Though the situation in the district has remained calm since the 2023 violence, officials are maintaining strict vigilance to prevent any flare-up.
