GMADA to earmark 30 acres near Jhanjeri for dumping ground: Mayor

The Greater Mohali Development Authority (GMADA) is exploring the possibility of allocating 30 acres of its land near Jhanjheri village to the Municipal Corporation (MC) for a new dumping site, Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu said today.

“The step is aimed at effectively resolving the growing issues of waste accumulation and related environmental problem and resolve the growing problems and public complaints regarding garbage processing in and around the city,” he added.

Sidhu along with Phase-5 and Phase-11 residents met GMADA Chief Administrator Vishesh Sarangal, who assured them that land near Jhanjeri to be allocated to the civic body.

At present, there is no dumping ground in the city where garbage can be disposed off. Earlier, the MC used a dumping ground near Phase 8B. However, due to High Court orders, the site was shut down over a year ago.

Since then, waste has been accumulating across various parts of the city, causing significant pressure on the civic body’s resource management centre (RMC) collection points.

The city has grappling with a severe garbage crisis, specifically near Shahi Majra and Sector 77’s Judge Colony. Waste from GMADA areas, private housing societies, and Balongi is also being dumped within the MC limits.

“I have also requested the relocation of the garbage processing plants near the RMC point in Phase 5 and near the railway line in Phase 11 due to the foul smell and other issues arising from these facilities,” Sidhu said.

Residents said both the plants are very close to residential areas, causing daily inconvenience to the locals due to the stench.

Councillors Harjeet Singh Bholu, Sucha Singh Kalour, Jagdish Jagga, Sarpanch, Jagatpura, Ranjit Gill, and others there was increasing opposition from locals against garbage processing in these areas.
