Wild elephants wreak havoc on crops in Yamunanagar village

A herd of wild elephants has caused significant damage to crops and trees in Araiyanwala village of Yamunanagar district, leaving farmers anxious and helpless. The village, located close to the Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary, has seen repeated intrusions by elephants over the past few nights.

According to villagers, the herd — consisting of three elephants — entered the agricultural fields on the night of July 5 and damaged sugarcane crops along with 20 poplar trees in one of the farms. The animals reportedly returned again later the same night, causing further destruction.

“We are upset as the elephants are destroying our sugarcane and other crops and damaging our poplar trees. We are helpless. We can’t do anything when we see that jumbos are crushing our crops,” said a local farmer, expressing frustration over the repeated incursions.

Officials from the Wildlife Department confirmed the presence of the elephants and said measures are being taken to protect villagers and property. “We have deputed a team in this village, which is patrolling the area to drive away elephants from agricultural fields if they return,” said Lilu Ram, Wildlife Inspector for Yamunanagar district.

Farmers have also been advised to stay vigilant. “They’ve been asked to remain alert and use noise deterrents like crackers or even gunfire to scare away the elephants,” Lilu Ram said.
