HPU to host NDMA centre on campus

In a major step towards building resilience against natural disasters, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is set to establish a National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Centre on its campus.

The development follows a meeting between Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of HPU, and Rajinder Singh, Member and Head of Department at NDMA, held recently in New Delhi. During their detailed discussion, the two explored the vision, objectives and support mechanisms required for setting up the centre. Rajinder Singh assured the Vice-Chancellor of NDMA’s full cooperation and assistance in mobilising research funding for the initiative.

The Vice-Chancellor shared concerns related to disaster management in Himachal Pradesh, highlighting challenges such as rapid urbanisation, climate change and the urgent need for technological advancements in disaster risk reduction. He emphasised that the proposed centre will play a key role in training and developing a dedicated pool of researchers who can contribute meaningfully to national efforts in disaster management.

Prof Singh also extended an invitation to the NDMA Head to be the guest at HPU’s upcoming 56th Foundation Day celebrations.

Appreciating the Vice-Chancellor’s proactive efforts, Rajinder Singh lauded the establishment of the Himalayan Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (HIM& DR³) at the university within just one month of the new VC taking charge. He noted that this centre would significantly enhance HPU’s contribution to national initiatives in disaster management and climate change.

The NDMA official reaffirmed that NDMA would provide all possible support for research and capacity-building efforts in Himachal Pradesh, underlining the shared commitment to strengthening disaster resilience in the region.
