Jan Aushadhi centre at Guru Nanak Hospital in Amritsar to provide surgery medicines

As part of an initiative to provide all kinds of medicines to patients, Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) associated with Government Medical College here is all set to expand the services offered at its Jan Aushadhi Kendra, a generic medicine store that aims to provide affordable healthcare to patients. Currently, the centre offers medicines for general medical conditions, but soon it will also stock surgery-related medicines and equipment.

GNDH Medical Superintendent Karamjit Singh has initiated the process by requesting a list of essential medicines and equipment required for surgeries from the in charges of the wards of the Surgery Department at the hospital. This list will include medications used during and after surgery. The hospital plans to source these medicines from the Jan Aushadhi warehouse in Ludhiana, and they are expected to be available at the centre within the next few days, said Dr Karamjit Singh.

He said that the development would benefit patients significantly, especially considering the high footfall at the GNDH. On an average, 800 to 900 patients visit the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) daily, and around 60 major and 85 minor operations are performed at the hospital every day. With the addition of surgery-related medicines at the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, patients will have access to quality healthcare at a lower cost.

In a related effort to improve patient care, the GNDH has also set up six counters in the emergency ward, specifically for Ayushman card holders. The Medical Superintendent said that this move aimed to streamline the treatment process for these patients and reduce waiting time. Dr Karamjit Singh emphasised that these counters would enable Ayushman card holders to receive free treatment after registration.

The GNDH serves a large population, including patients from neighbouring states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and others. The hospital’s efforts to make healthcare more affordable and accessible are commendable, and the expansion of the Jan Aushadhi Kendra’s services is a step in the right direction, stated visitors to the hospital.
