230 attend trials for college sports wings

Total 230 players (boys) attended selection trials under the residential and day-scholar scheme, conducted by the Punjab Sports Department to enrol them for the session 2025-26 with sports wings of colleges affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh. Trials in 15 sports disciplines were held at different venues across the district on Tuesday.

The games included athletics, archery, badminton, boxing, cycling, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, shooting, swimming, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

Kuldeep Chugh, District Sports Officer (DSO) said in three games — archery, kho-kho and badminton, not a single aspirant turned up while the maximum number of players attended the trials in football (91), followed by athletics (37), hockey (24), weightlifting (17) and volleyball (14). The break-up of other disciplines is boxing (11), cycling (4), judo (3), kabaddi (12), shooting (5), swimming (3) and wrestling (9).

He said selected players under the residential scheme would be provided sports kit and free training, besides Rs 225 daily as diet/refreshment allowance while those selected under the day-scholar scheme would receive Rs 125 per day as diet money in addition to sports kit and free training, as per guidelines of the sports wings scheme.Trials for girls would be held on Wednesday, the DSO said.
