JanDhan Accounts: Some media reports claimed that the government is taking steps to close inactive accounts to prevent misuse of PM JanDhan accounts. The government said that DFS has started a three-month campaign from July 1 to adopt JanDhan Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana across the country.
Finance Ministry on JanDhan Account: In the past few days, some media reports were claiming that the government is planning to close inactive PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts. After which there was a stir among crores of account holders who had opened accounts under the scheme. But now the Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Finance Ministry have denied any kind of report of closing inactive PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts. In a statement issued by the Department of Financial Services, it was said that ‘banks have not been asked to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts.’
Steps being taken to prevent misuse of accounts!
Some media reports claimed that the government has ordered the closure of such accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in which no transaction has taken place in the last 24 months. The reports said that this step is being taken by the government to prevent misuse of these accounts. Apart from this, the government said that a three-month campaign has been started by DFS from July 1 to adopt Jan Dhan Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana across the country.
The number of PMJDY accounts is constantly increasing
The banks will also do KYC of all the due accounts once again during this campaign. The statement also said that DFS continuously monitors the number of inactive PMJDY accounts and banks have been advised to contact the concerned account holders to make their accounts operational. The number of PMJDY accounts is constantly increasing. No case of large-scale closure of inactive PMJDY accounts has come to the notice of the department.
The government launched the scheme on 28 August 2014. Through the Jan Dhan Yojana, the government has been successful in connecting the poor and deprived sections of the country to the banking system. Along with this, the benefits of social security schemes are also being directly delivered to the beneficiaries through Direct Bank Transfer i.e. DBT. According to the PMJDY website, the scheme has 55.69 crore beneficiaries so far. A total of Rs 2,59,622.39 crore is deposited in these accounts.
