Sirsa playschool death: HC takes suo motu notice

Taking suo motu cognisance of a news item published in The Sunday Tribune, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has initiated a public interest litigation (PIL) in connection with the death of a four-year-old child at an “unregistered playschool” in Sirsa.

Taking up the suo motu or “court on its own motion” case today, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry put the state of Haryana and other respondents on notice. The Bench also called for the submission of a status report in the matter.

A detailed note in the matter said that the news item, “Unregistered playschool under fire after 4-year old boy dies in Sirsa” appeared in ‘The Sunday Tribune’ on July 6, “highlighting that a four-year old child namely Armaan has died due to administrative negligence at an unregistered playschool in Mamera Kalan village in Sirsa. The inspection of the school uncovered shocking lapses”. The case will now come up for further hearing on August 1.
