187 college players turn up on second day of sports trials

As many as 187 players (girls) turned up here on Wednesday on the second day of the selection trials being organised by the Punjab Sports Department under the residential and day-scholar scheme for the session 2025-26 to enroll them in the sports wings of colleges affiliated to Panjab University.

Yesterday, 230 boys attended trials, taking the total to 417 in 15 sports disciplines, including athletics, archery, badminton, boxing, cycling, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, shooting, swimming, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

Giving this information, Kuldeep Chugh, district sports officer, said except for archery, aspirants took part in the trials of other games. The break-up of all listed games is athletics (67), badminton (3), boxing (27), cycling (11), football (108), hockey (24), judo (5), kabaddi (52), kho-kho (19), shooting (8), swimming (5), volleyball (27), weightlifting (45) and wrestling (16), while there was no candidate for archery on both days.

The names of the selected players will be recommended to the authorities in Chandigarh for registration with the wings according to the availability of the seats. “The successful players (boys and girls) under the residential scheme will be provided sports kits and free training, besides Rs 225 daily as diet/refreshment allowance, while those enrolled under the day-scholar scheme would receive Rs 125 per day as diet money in addition to sports kit and free training as per the guidelines of the sports wings scheme,” said the district sports officer.
