Every month, on the 30th, every individual is waiting eagerly for his/her hard-earned salary to be credited into their bank account. Krrrrrrr! Rent, bills, and then savings, this is a usual routine. An Indian software engineer at Google shared how she spends her salary in New York City. In a collaborative video with popular podcaster Kushal Lodha, software engineer Maitri Mangal detailed her monthly expenses along with the typical pay scale for various roles at the tech giant.

The short clip has gone viral on social media platforms. The viral clip begins with Mangal in her apartment as she discusses her monthly living expenses, detailing everything from groceries to rent. While speaking to the podcaster, she reveals that she spends roughly $5,000 per month. Mangal states she spends about $3,000 on rent, and states the total she has going out is between $1,000 and $2,000 daily. Mangal states about $100 to $200 a month for transportation.

Later in the video, Mangal stated that a software engineer earns between $150,000 and $200,000 annually on average in NYC. Lodha wrote, “What’s the average package at Google? I asked Maitri, a Software Engineer at Google, and she shared that it’s around ₹1.6 Crores in general across roles! Then I asked her, how much does it cost to actually live in New York? From rent to groceries, she breaks down her monthly expenses, and it’s eye opening!”

What some surprised people were actually her breakdown of her monthly budget in New York, a city that regularly ranks among the most expensive places in the world to live. Converting in Indian rupees, she spends approximately $5,000 (Rs 4.2 lakh) a month where rent is $3,000 (Rs 2.5 lakh). In New York, my everyday expenses, which include takeout, groceries, and entertainment, amount to $1,000-$2,000(Rs 85,684–Rs 1,71,368 approx.), then transportation would cost me $100-$200(Rs 8,568–Rs 17,136 approx.).

According to Maitri’s LinkedIn profile, she completed her Bachelor’s degree, Computer Science at Binghamton University. Speaking about her work experience, she worked at Boston University, where she completed her Network Science Research internship. She worked as a software engineer at Bloomberg LP and USA Today.
