Jaya Bachchan once said internet was responsible for ‘anxiety attacks’; Shweta Bachchan responded saying…
In today’s world, topics like mental health, anxiety, and disorders are not taboo. They are conversation starters to raise awareness and shift perspective. But back in the day, most people weren’t even aware of these terms and considered this forbidden. This evolution in the perspective of the new generation differs from that of the previous generation and highlights a different view of how society views emotional well-being. One such similar case happened when veteran actress Jaya Bachchan and her daughter Shweta Bachchan discussed the rising cases of anxiety in modern times when both of them appeared on the podcast of Jaya’s granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda.
Jaya Bachchan on Anxiety Attacks
Navya Naveli Nanda is often seen tapping on various modern-day issues and topics with her mother, Shweta Bachchan, and grandmother, Jaya Bachchan. In one of her podcasts, while discussing anxiety, Navya spoke about an anxiety attack. Jaya Bachchan, who is known for her bold and opinionated personality, said she hadn’t heard of the term anxiety attack before. “We hadn’t heard of an anxiety attack when we were kids. Let alone our childhood, we never heard it in our midlife”, she said.
She also said that today, the young generation is getting “too much information”, whether it’s about beauty, looks, or what they are doing that keeps them under constant stress.
She also emphasised that today’s generation is extremely dependent on the internet. “Navya, what happens among your generation is that ‘answer quickly, reply to texts quickly’. You get your validation from what you see on the internet and your phone,” she said.
Shweta Bachchan on Anxiety Attacks
However, her daughter Shweta Bachchan had a completely different opinion. Shweta had a more nuanced approach, and she believes that anxiety has always existed, but it was never spoken about. “Anxiety was always there. It’s now more identifiable. It’s now more identifiable. It’s more spoken about,” Shweta said.
She even said that Jaya Bachchan herself has experienced an anxiety attack. “It’s just more vocal,” she added.
This difference of opinion between Jaya Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan highlights the contrasting beliefs amongst generations. While one finds it a modern-day concept stemming from digital overexposure, others feel that it’s an age-old emotion that is finally getting a voice.
