The winning bid hit €7 million ($8.2 million) before fees. This iconic Birkin was the very first one made by Hermès, crafted specifically for British actress and singer Jane Birkin. She carried it almost daily between 1985 and 1994, before it became a legendary luxury symbol. On Thursday, Sotheby’s auctioned off the rare bag during an online event featuring high-end fashion pieces from designers like Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior. Excited gasps filled the live stream as bidding soared. After a fierce 10-minute battle among nine bidders, a private collector from Japan won the piece, according to Sotheby’s press release.
