CM reviews law and order, calls for crackdown on extortion, drug trade

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday evening chaired a high-level review meeting on law and order and issued stern directives for immediate and decisive action against those involved in extortion, drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

CM’s warning to cops

The Chief Minister directed all SPs to instruct their field staff that any police personnel found consuming alcohol while on duty or in uniform would face the strictest possible action. “The police are here to serve and protect. Indiscipline or irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said.

Chief Secretary’s directive

Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi advised officers to interact directly with citizens to understand and resolve their issues. “When officers go among the public and address their grievances on priority, the image of the police and administration improves and public trust grows stronger,” he said.

“Extortion cases will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Immediate action must be taken to curb such cases and the strictest punishment should be ensured for the culprits,” the Chief Minister told senior police officers.

He emphasised the need for the police administration to remain fully alert and responsive to ensure that common citizens feel secure and confident in the law enforcement system.

Chief Principal Secretary to CM Rajesh Khullar announced that, following the CM’s directions, dedicated extortion cells would be established in every district. These special teams will be responsible for investigating such cases thoroughly and ensuring swift action against offenders.

“Swift and effective action must be taken so that the culprits are punished at the earliest, and a strong message is sent to society,” Khullar told officials during the meeting.

CM Saini also called for continuous monitoring of crime trends at the police station level. “Accountability must not be limited to the district level. Every police station must proactively track crime and respond to any rise in incidents with urgency,” he said.

Giving priority to the safety of women and girl students, the Chief Minister directed regular police inspections at schools and colleges, particularly girls’ institutions. He also asked officers to personally interact with students to raise awareness and prevent incidents before they occur.

“Special patrolling must be arranged during school and college dispersal hours to instil confidence among female students and their families,” he added.

Officials informed the CM that police have already identified several hotspots and sensitive routes through consultations with working women and students. These areas have been placed under enhanced surveillance with increased police presence.

In addition, the Chief Minister directed that markets and other high-footfall areas be regularly patrolled during peak hours. “Public safety is paramount. Sensitive spots must be assessed continuously and additional patrolling must be deployed as needed,” he said. He also instructed that the Durga Shakti Force be deployed specifically to safeguard women in vulnerable areas.

The CM also issued firm instructions to tackle drug trafficking. He ordered that designated officers be made accountable in every district to prevent both the supply and consumption of narcotics.

“We are committed to saving our youth from the menace of drugs. A coordinated and vigorous campaign must be launched to address this,” he said.
