Civic body cracks down on owners over waterlogging, garbage in vacant plots

The Municipal Corporation has launched a citywide drive against owners of vacant plots where garbage and rainwater have accumulated, posing health risks. Acting on Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney’s directions under Section 163 of the Citizen Safety Code 2023, the civic body has begun issuing challans and notices to ensure timely cleaning.

MC officials reported that 302 challans have been issued across five zones: East (35), West (55), Central (73), North (60) and South (79). Plot owners have been given two days to clean the area, failing which the Municipal Corporation will clean it and recover the cost.

MC Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh emphasised the urgent need to eliminate filth and stagnant water, which create a breeding ground for disease-carrying insects. Plot owners have also been asked to build boundary walls or install fencing to prevent recurring issues. The Health Department assured that all identified plots will be cleaned, with continued efforts to safeguard public health.
